The Bookletes is a 7th and 8th grade book club that meets once a month to discuss a book they've voted on and read the month before. You can join at any time.

Underground Challenge-for 8th grade eyes only!

In January 8th grade will begin reading the same book (secretly). 8th grade teachers will be trying to uncover which book the students are reading and then read the same book before the end of the year. During the last library lesson of the year both students and teachers will take a quiz on the mystery book. There will be a special prize for whatever group wins with the highest average comprehension score.

Here is how it works:

Students:

1. The book will be passed to you wrapped in a plan brown wrapper. DO NOT open it in front of teachers.
2. You will read the book and then come to the library to sign the banner and reading log and receive your button (hopefully if I can get the machine to work!!).
3. You will re-wrap the book and pass it on to another student.
3. Help encourage your classmates to read the book but be careful not to discuss the book in front of teachers.

Teachers:
1. You will observe what students are reading and see if you can determine the Underground Challenge book
2. You will read the book
3. Help encourage your peers to read the book
4. You may not ask a student a question that they would have to lie to answer (example: "Is X the Underground Challenge book?"

Hints for teachers:
No way-no hints yet...maybe in March.

Library wikis are invaluable tools for fostering a love of life long learning. Here are just a few tips to get you started.

When building a wiki for your library consider the following:

~Your audience: make sure that the wiki meets the needs of your audience. Is it for students only or both students and faculty?

~Your platform: use a wiki that is easy and yet looks professional

~Ads: pick a wiki that does not use adds (can contain questionable content). Wetpaint removes adds from education sites

~Security: Make sure that you are considering the confidentiality of your students. Follow your district guidelines on posting student names and/or student work. Consider using an Alias rather than an actual student name. Students should never discuss personal information on school sites.

~Media: Are you using web 2.0 technology you are comfortable teaching? This technology should enrich the website's content and make your readers come back for more.

~Content: What do your readers want most. Consider ideas that enhance the love of reading (book talks, book blogs, highlighting new books, podcasts, etc.)

~FYI wetpaint no longer supports add free educational sites. There are plenty of add free options to choose from or you can pay the monthly charge to have adds removed.

Shackelford Sounds Library

	The newest addition to the Shackelford Library is the Shackelford Sounds Collection. This collection consists of a Playaway (photo to the left) and a book. Now you can read the book while listening to the audio. The Playaways come with a convenient neck strap and can be checked out for three weeks just like a book This playaways may look large, but they are actually smaller than a deck of cards.

	The Breakup Bible: a Novel-Book Blog Date 11/16 by: Melissa Cantor
Blah-been reading a lot but never time to blog... In this novel we meet Jen whose world is falling apart because she has just broken up with her boyfriend. Not only has she lost her appetite, but now she has to go back to school and work with him on the school newspaper. Jen’s grandmother gives her a copy of The Breakup Bible, which seems to make things even worse when she tries to follow the guidelines. Although some of this novel is really predictable, there are parts that are honest and will really make you think. The part I enjoyed most has nothing to do with the breakup, but everything to do with racism and how sometimes schools are segregated even when they aren’t.

	Catching Fire-Book Blog Date 11/16 by: Suzanne Collins
Katniss and Peta are back in this second installment of the Hunger Games trilogy. Now that Katniss and Peta have won food for their town they begin the tour or champions and prepare to mentor new candidates for the games. Unbeknownst to them, a resistance is rising because of their part in the games, and it has tough consequences. I didn’t think she could pull it off, but this book is just as good as the first one! Every time I read these books I think about how magical they would be in movie format…except with all the killing I probably wouldn’t watch them because I don’t watch rated R movies normally. The games are just as original as last time and the story kept me guessing until the very end. Sigh…now I just have to wait a year for the last one. Pick it up when you have time to read. You won’t be able to put it down!

	The London Eye Mystery-Book Blog Date 10/21 by: Siobhan Dowd
Ted and Kat are excited when their aunt and cousin Salim arrive after many years apart due to an argument between their parents. After much discussion the group decides to ride the London Eye. When a mysterious stranger offers Salim a free ticket the cousins decide to save money and just let Salim ride. As they watch the pod go into the air they track its progress and are shocked when Salim doesn’t get off the ride. The real thrill ride starts there as the family and police try to discover what has happened to Salim. I really enjoyed this book because although it is never named, it appears that Ted has Asperger’s Syndrome, so it was very interesting to see how his mind worked things out. I loved how genuine his character was written with the good and the bad traits that come from this disease and how it affected his relationship with others.

	La Linea-Book Blog Date 10/21 by: Ann Jaramillo
Miguel finally gets notice that his father has arranged his passage to America by crossing the border with the help of a coyote. What he doesn’t know is that his sister is planning on secretly sneaking across with him. Follow this nonstop journey as Miguel and Elena try to find their parents on the other side of the border. This is an older book, but I won it at a librarian’s conference and it looked very interesting. If you are looking for a short, yet very enjoyable read, this book is for you because I had trouble putting it down. Whether you agree or disagree with illegal immigration, this book will make you think beyond the laws and about the hearts of the people involved.

	Waiting for Normal-Book Blog Date 9/26 by Leslie Connor
In this touching novel we meet Addie who is trying to deal with a mother who experiences extreme ups and downs and is frequently neglectful. After the separation of her mother and her stepfather, Addie misses her sisters and the only man she has ever known as a father. Addie’s friendship with a neighbor makes up for her mother’s lack of dependability, but you are sure to want to bring Addie home with you so she can be a teenager instead of the mini adult she has to be to survive.

	The Merchant of Death-Book Blog Date 9/19 by D.J. MacHale
I started this series because the boys in my library spoke so highly of it after they had read the novel. Then the coolest thing ever happened-the APL donated the funds so that Mr. MacHale could come speak to our library. Not only did he do a fantastic job, but now I can’t keep his books in the library! The Merchant of Death is the first in a ten book series where Bobby Pendragon discovers that he is a Traveler and can travel to and from distant worlds (both geographically and in time) helping to solve problems and protect the world from the antagonist St. Dane. Set on the planet of Denduron, this book may be a tiny bit slow starting out, but once it had my attention once I was hooked. I’m just now starting the second book in the series and I’m having trouble putting it down!

	Chasing Lincoln’s Killer-Book Blog Date 8/21 by James L. Swanson
I’m not sure why, but when I was in elementary and junior high 90% of what I read was nonfiction. As an adult I read mostly fiction and biographies…not quite sure what that changed. I picked up Chasing Lincoln’s Killer because not only was it getting great reviews, but it seemed like a good “boy book”. Sometimes you guys get the short end of the stick, so I’m working on finding great literature you will really enjoy. I’m sorry to say that this isn’t just a boy book even though every boy I’ve talked to has loved it. This novel is the story of how Lincoln was assassinated and the search for Booth and the other conspirators. I thought I knew my history, but there was a ton of things I was unaware of and probably should have been (sadly, I only knew some because of National Treasure 2…sigh). The story goes back and forth between Booth and Lincoln which although tricky at first but quickly becomes easy to follow. Pick up this book and you will not be disappointed.

	How Not to be Popular-Book Blog Date 8/21 by Jennifer Ziegler
I thought it was just me…I know I’m far from normal, but this book is laugh out loud hilarious. My sister read it after I did because she had to know what I was laughing at and then she had to retell me all of the funny parts just in case I’d forgotten (and yes, I laughed again). I was lucky enough to get to meet this author at a meet and greet this summer and it was all I could do not to gush about how wonderful her book was. As part of Operation Avoid Friends, Maggie comes up with AMAZING ways to deter friendship. She isn’t antisocial, just tired of making friends and then her family moving all the time. If you’ve ever moved or even if you just know the struggle of long distance relationships you are sure to appreciate Maggie’s fight to avoid getting hurt. This is a Lone Star 2009-2010 book.

	Absolutely Maybe-Book Blog Date 8/11 by Lisa Yee
Although I haven't been blogging this summer, I have been reading a lot of great books. I've picked three great books that I've read recently and then I promise to get back on track and start blogging regularly again. Absolutely Maybe is on the consideration list for a Lone Star List in 2010-2011, and after reading it I can understand why. Maybe, short for Maybelline (yes, named after the mascara) has a rocky relationship with her mother at best. Her mom runs a training studio for future pageant stars, while Maybe loves to dye her hair weird colors with Cool-Aid packets. When her future step-father tries to rape her and her mother doesn't believe her, Maybe decides to go to California in search of a birth father she knows nothing about. Things are not quite as expected in California, both for the better and worse but you won't be disappointed by this novel or with Maybe!

	Dead is the New Black-Book Blog Date 8/11 by Marlene Perez
This book is also on the Lone Star Consideration list. Currently there are three books about the three Giordano sisters (also Dead is a State of Mind and Dead is So Last Year with promises of more to come. I fell in love with the main character Daisy, because I could relate to her quirky nature. The plots are predictable but enjoying and make for a very quick read (I read two in an hour). If you enjoy stories with vampires, werewolves, and a little mystery, you are sure to enjoy these.

	Rapunzel's Revenge-Book Blog Date 8/11 by Shannon and Dean Hale
Growing up Rapunzel was one of my favorite fairy tales second only to Sleeping Beauty. I attribute that to the fact that I had a pixie haircut for most of my childhood, and I'd always wanted long hair. This graphic novel is all about what would happen if Rapunzel could get her revenge on the witch who put her into the castle (or in this story a really big tree grown from magic). I was impressed by the originality of the plot and loved the beautiful color illustrations. Just a word to those who don't normally read graphic novels...you can't just "read" the words in this one, like all graphic novels, you must look at the illustrations or you will get confused because you miss important information.

	Skelton Creek-Book Blog Date 4/27 by Patrick Carman
Ryan and Sarah are best friends, but when Ryan breaks his leg falling of the old Dredge (a machine for mining gold) his parents refuse to allow them to hang out anymore. The book portion of this story is Ryan's journal...stream of conscious thoughts and raw emotion. The second piece of this book story doesn't take place in the book but on the Internet where Sarah emails Ryan secret codes to watch video about they mystery they were trying to solve when they took that secret trip to the Dredge. Okay one video even made me jump! Anyone who knows me knows I'm a HUGE Patrick Carman fan, but oh my was I impressed with this book. In fact, I would dare to say that his original format is going to start a new trend. My only complaint was wow did this story end right in the middle of all the action and sigh...The Ghost in the Machine (the sequel) isn't out yet. Oh I CAN'T hardly wait!! 	Found (The Missing Book 1)-Book Blog Date 4/27 by Margaret Peterson Haddix
I finished this book several months ago but didn't take the time to blog. This is one of the books that I've listened to on audio in the car. I used to be kind of a book snob and wouldn't recognize anything as reading but when you actually had a book in your hand. Now I know that simply isn't the case. Reading comes in many forms, but I still love a book the best! Jonah and Chip's mystery begins when they receive letters in the mail warning "You are one of the missing!" and later "Beware they are coming back to get you!" Add the discovery that they were found on a plane that just appeared out of no where (with no pilot or crew) and then disappeared when all the babies were unloaded and you have the start of a great adventure! This book is sure to have you wondering about book 2.

	After Tupac and D Foster-Book Blog Date 4/6 by Jacqueline Woodson
Set in Queens, Neeka, D, and the story's narrator quickly become friends for life, or as they put it: "three the hard way". This compelling story follows the characters as they grow and learn about the world around them, including when Tupac was shot and visiting Neeka's older brother in jail. Okay, confession time...I thought D Foster was going to be a rapper when I picked up this book. HA HA. Shows what I know about the world of rap. What I love best about this book is it helps me understand a place I've never been and love characters I've never met. Sigh...I even listened to the song mentioned so much in the book. Still don't like rap, but like the novel.

	The Compound-Book Blog Date 4/4 By S.A. Bodeen
With the threat of biological warfare looming, Eli's father builds an underground compound to protect the family in the event of an attack. Tragedy separates the family but things get even worse when Eli realizes that it isn't just the automatic locks keeping them in---their father won't let them out. Full of character growth and a VERY bizarre twist that no review seems to talk about so I can keep a secret too. Although this book started out with a little too much background for me, it was needed for the story, so just hang in there because once the action starts it doesn't stop!

	The Surrender Tree-Book Blog Date 4/4 by Margarita Engle
This collection of poetry tells the story of Cuba's struggle for freedom through the eyes of several main characters. The titles of the poem help you keep up with the point of view that poem is told from. but the voice of the poem does that as well. The vivid images and quotable text make this book an instant winner in my book! In fact, if you weren't in the library last week you probably missed me bragging and bragging on this book. You can tell by the cover that this book is winning lots of awards-the reason is clear...it is fabulous!

	The Great Wide Sea-Book Blog Date 3/20 by Madaline Herlong
After the death of their mother, three brothers join their father on a sailing expedition that takes them through a series of very realistic events. Just as they are starting to adjust to life without their mother, the boys wake up one morning to find their dad missing and a huge storm coming. As a huge fan of adventure stories there were parts of this book that I absolutely loved, and parts that seemed a little bit slow. Maybe that is because I'm a girl though because the boys I talked to love it. Plus, I think sometimes it's the frame of mind I am in...moving from a Science Fiction to a Realistic Fiction is kind of a weird genre transition. If you enjoy sailing or survival books, this will catch your interest.

	Unwind by Neal Shusterman-Book Blog Date 3/3
Another futuristic science fiction story, Unwind centers around the idea that for whatever reason deemed appropriate by their guardians, students between the ages of 13-17 can be unwound. There are many wonderful characters that come to life in this novel, but it primarily focuses on three characters: Connor; being unwound because he is viewed as a behavior problem, Risa; being unwound because she is good but not great and the orphanage needs space, and finally Lev; who is a tithe and resents being called an Unwind. Wow-was this a strange book but I really loved it! I normally don't like stuff this far off the scifi chart, but I had fun with this. About two thirds of the way through the book I was really worried about the ending. I was going to be soooo mad if everyone I was attached to as a character was unwound. While it didn't end how I was expecting...sigh...I was able to like and appreciate how it did finally close. I'll leave it to you to investigate what being unwound means.

	Diamond Willow by Helen Frost-Book Blog Date 2/23
This book is told mostly through poems, making it a very fast read. Willow lives in Alaska and loves her dogs almost as much as her family. After a horrible accident, Willow is determined to find a solution. Unknown to Willow is that the spirits of past family members look after her in their new animal forms. My favorite part of this novel is the creative layout. Willow's part is told in diamond shape poems, while the story from the ancestor's point of view is told in traditional paragraph form. Hidden within Willow's words are other words in bold that are almost like secrets Willow is unable to admit, but longs to share. Although I don't believe in reincarnation, this book made me a little teary at one point because of the beauty of friendship and love.

	The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson-Book Blog Date 2/23
I didn't use to be this way, but I've decided I love futuristic fiction. Set in the future, I thought this would be just another cloning book, but I was pleasantly surprised. When Jenna wakes up from a coma she discovers that she doesn't remember anything about her past or even common vocabulary. The book is told in short bursts rather than chapters, so like Jenna you discover parts of the story in segments as she discovers them herself. If you like science fiction, you should certainly check out this book.

	The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins-Book Blog Date 2/9/09
One boy and one girl are chosen to represent their district in this futuristic novel. These 24 contestants are forced to compete against each other as their dramatic events are televised. When Katniss' younger sister is chosen, she volunteers to take her place, knowing what that might possibly mean for her future. I'm a huge Gregor the Overlander fan, but I have to tell you that I was so impressed with this book I literally couldn't put it down. I started it after dinner one evening and didn't stop reading until I was finished! Not only has Mrs. Collins done a wonderful job with character development, but the story keeps you guessing about what will happen next. I loved how Katniss isn't willing to just accept the rules of the game for what they are, but tries to creatively solve her problems. My only problem now is that book two isn't released yet. Sigh...
	The Secret Hour (Book 1 in the Midnighters Series) by Scott Westerfeld-Book Blog Date 1/28/09
Please excuse the lag time since my last post. I’m in a Jane Austen Book Club, so I had to finish Mansfield Park before my next meeting. I was also very sick (due to stinky cedar trees) so I’m just now finding time to blog. Today was an ice day so we weren’t at school and I was able to get quite a lot of reading and website management done. Because I was an elementary teacher before I was a junior high librarian I’m playing catch up on a few of the popular series. Currently I’m reading the Midnighters Series so I thought that today I’d blog about The Secret Hour. This book was a lot different than I expected, and I found myself in love with the characters and wanting to read the next story. Set in Bixby, Oklahoma, the midnighters are a group of students who get an extra hour of time that no one else does. When time stops for the town at 12:00 it seems like a fraction of a second to everyone else, but only these few midnighters know the truth. Full of adventure and mystery this fantasy is sure to have you thinking up 13 letter words and leave you wanting more. My words: unforeseeable, readabilities, and maybe proliferating…now I just need to find some untouched metal.

	the dead and the gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer- Book Blog Date 1/9/09
the dead and the gone is a chilling tale about what happens when the moon is knocked out of orbit. Alex is forced to make some very adult decisions when he realizes that his parents have disappeared and that he is now responsible for caring for his two sisters. This book is sure to make you think about what you might do in the same situation. Along those same lines, I listened to this audio tape driving to Colorado to visit my family over Christmas break. As the climate of earth cooled in the book, I caught myself actually thinking it was getting colder in the car. THEN to make it even funnier, there is a section of the story that deals with ash falling from erupting volcanoes and making the snow look gray. Every time we saw dirty snow in Colorado it brought back the sense of desperation I felt as I read the book. Needless to say the author presented a very believable story!

	Princess Ben: Being a Wholly Truthful Account of Her Various Discoveries and Misadventures, Recounted to the Best of Her Recollection, in Four Parts by Catherine Gilbert Murdock -Book Blog Date 1/2/09
It is not a shock to anyone that knows me well that I still sort of believe in Fairy Tales. Not the whole prince thing, but that love can conquer all---plus a little adventure. I think that I why I enjoyed Princess Ben so much. Here is a character; Benevolence, or Ben, who not only has to deal with the death of her mother and disappearance of her father, but now has to endure princess training knowing that she is about to be married off to save her kingdom to a fairly stuck-up prince. Hidden throughout the story are elements of other fairy tales with a different approach. They actually start so subtly I almost wondered if it was an accident. One of my favorite examples is when Princess Ben gets upset at the prince and hurls her shoe at him (think Cinderella) but then still has to leave the room, so she kind of walk/limps out while still trying to keep her dignity intact. Obviously, Princess Ben is a character that grows a lot during the novel! That is one of the things I liked best about this story because the different character’s reactions made this story very believable and kept me guessing. Princess Ben is an adventure, fantasy, and romance all rolled into one. An engaging read you’re sure to enjoy

	Inkheart by Cornelia Funke-Book Blog Date 12/15/08
I felt it only appropriate that I began my first ever book blog discussing my all time favorite book (so far). I almost talked myself out of this, (you’ll find I’m prone to over think things) because maybe it was more relevant for me to blog about books that are current in the world of YA literature. My justification (although flimsy) is that this book was just recently made into a movie that comes out in January 2009. Inkheart by Cornelia Funke transports the reader into a world where the written word can come to life by the power of a reader’s voice. Perhaps this concept is what appeals to me most: the thought of being able to actually see the wonderful words of a novel transform into a living creature right before your very eyes. Funke’s word choice always amazes me; and if you think about the fact that she wrote the novel in German (her native tongue) first, that is ever more impressing! What happens when Meggie and Moe encounter Capricorn? What role with Dustfinger play? Read the story to find out all these answers and more. Random bit of trivia-my cat is named Farid in honor of one of the characters in the story. Farid translated means unique, and since my cat acts like a dog I thought that was only appropriate!

Destiny WebCat and On Line Databases
Looking for something? WebCat is a new source providing you access to AISD Library Services from home or school. Once you see the Destiny Homepage you have a few options:

View the catalog: click on the catalog tab to search the items in the Shack library
Reserve a book: See Miss V when you check out if you find a book you'd like to reserve.
Use Destiny Quest: Log in with your student id, click on catalog, and select Destiny Quest.
Just a reminder that after you log in you can check to see when your books are due under the my info tab
Don't forget about the visual search as a helpful tool to search genres

Circulation Policy
7th Grade: 2 books for a two week period.
8th Grade: 3 books for a three week period.

Fines
Fines are charged for overdue materials at a rate of ten cents per day. Fines and overdue notices are sent once a month to the students. Students with outstanding material and/or fines over $5.00 will not be allowed check out privileges until fines/lost books have been rectified. A canned good or a Patriot Perk can pay up to .50 cents of a fine.

Hours
8:00 A.M.-4:15 P.M.

IDs
IDs are made from 8:00 A.M. to 8:45 A.M.

Replacement Costs:
$1.00 for the first two IDs, $5.00 for every ID after that
$1.00 for new lanyards

Supporting the Library
The library is always looking for support. Here are just a few ways:

~Parents and guardians are invited to volunteer time for special events (must be an approved volunteer)
~Monetary donations for book purchases
~Shopping at the school book fair
~Purchasing Library supplies from our Office Depot Wish List
~Approved volunteers willing to read aloud to students on Fridays
~Contribute Digital Book Talks or Podcasts (with approval) for the website
